Lego today announced a product recall on the Lego Power Functions IR Speed remote control unit (set 8879). It seems the battery's may over heat and cause a "burn hazard". The recall covers controllers bought between April 2009 and May 2009 and is through to only affect around 1,000 units.
At this stage only 4 of them have been reported to overheat but Lego has announced a voluntary product recall.
The only way to purchase this part has been direct from Lego - as such lego knows who's bought all the controllers. Lego will be contacting all owners directly in the next few days in order to exchange the part for a new one.
