Thanks to a Lego fan club in France we now have images of the alternative model (b model) for the Lego Technic Mobile Crane (set 8053). The b model is a harbour crane!

And in case you missed it, another Lego Technic fan from France has managed to recreate the main model from photos.

From this you can see the unusual outrigger style.  On the full scale cranes this type of layout is normally reserved for the biggest mobile cranes.
