2010 Lego Technic sets make an apperence at Canadian Toy Fair

It's toy fair season at the moment where toy companies showcase their new and upcoming toys.  These images were captured at the Toronto Toy fare in Canada.

Lego Technic Excavator - set 8043

From the box we can see it contains 1123 parts and is aimed at 11-16 year olds.  The arm does have 3 degrees of articulation, the top half rotates,  and the tracks are driven.  This gives 6 motions with only 4 motors and 4 available controls from the remote control, so it looks like there'll be some form of switching mechanism between the 6 functions.

Lego Technic Container Truck - set 8052

Again from the box the set contains 686 parts and is aimed at ages 10 - 16 years old.  The truck is fitted with one Power Functions motor that looks like a medium sized one.  Presumably to load and offload the container.  The container can either be tipped as in a tipper truck, or offloaded to the back.  This looks like it's selected by a small gearbox on the side of the truck.

Lego Technic Mobile Crane - set 8053

The set contains 1289 parts and is aimed at 11-16 years.  The model doesn't appear to contain any Power Functions motors so presumably everything is manually driven.  The crane has unusual outriggers to stabilise the it.  They appear to form a large x, each swinging out from the side.  Looks like thumb type screws on each stabiliser leg.  The cranes hook is rather odd considering they didn't use the existing hook and pulley parts.  It'll be interesting how heavy a weight this crane will be able to lift with only one Linear Actuator.

Lego Technic Motorbike - set 8051

487 Lego parts aimed at 9 to 16 year olds.  The wheels on the bike look like new parts - wider than any other motor bike produced in the past.  This looks like a very detailed build using lots of small parts.

New Lego Technic sets for second half of 2010

Information has surfaced on new sets which might be planned for the second half of 2010.  The information comes from the Netherlands where an online shop gave the tantalising information.

Motorcycle (set 8051) - Chain transmission linked to a 3 cylinder engine, new wheels, front and rear suspension.  The alternative model will be a helicopter.

Container Truck (set 8052) - This set is describes as "heavily motorised" - not sure what that means.  It will also have multiple linear actuators to "lift the container on to the back of the truck".   This may be similar to 2009's flagship Crane Truck.  The alternative model will be a dumper truck.

Mobile Crane (set 8053) - The model will have all wheel steer, 4 leg stabilisers, telescoping arm (to 60cm) and able to lift "heavy" loads.  This sounds about the same size as the Lego Technic Crane (8438) - not as big as the 8421 set and bigger than the Rough Terrain crane (8270).

Instructions for the main 2009 models now on Lego.com

Lego have uploaded instructions for the main 2009 Technic Lego models.  This includes instructions for the Crane Truck (set 8258), Front Loader (8265) and the Snow Groomer (set 8263).

The B model instructions were released in early July 2009.  The B model instructions have also been released for the 8063 Sowing Machine (basically an alternative traler).

Review of Lego Technic Crane Truck – Set 8258

From the YouTube video of the model we can see a good overview of how it works.

My first impression is that the stabiliser legs look very flimsy.  On previous crane models the legs have actually raised the model of the ground.  There appears to be a lot of "play" in in the crane boom.  It would have been good to motorise the winch in some way, and to maybe have a motorised extension of the boom.  Rather disappointed that the crane arm doesn't extend much beyond the base of the model.

So will I be buying it?  I'll probably wait till it's available from Amazon and buy it as part of a bigger order.
