Lego Technic have launched a series of videos giving an insight to the design of new models. Currently covering the 2008 designs, there is a couple videos covering the Lego Technic Motorized Bulldozer (set 8275).
The process starts by doing some research around the Lego factory. Photos are taken of various equipment which are later sifted through to select the machinery to build.
After deciding on which model to build, they decise on the functions of the model. In the case of the Bulldozer, they decided to make blade, ripper and tracks motorsed using the new remote control functions.
The designers then move on to the design. They make rough scetch models using 6150 possible parts to make up the models. For the bulldozer they made 15 different varients of the model including tracked excavators, wheeled loaders and finally came up with the current bulldozer.
Lego base there selection on 3 things -
- Authenticity - does the model look correct. Does the bulldozer look like a bulldozer or does it look like something else.
- Functionality - does it actually do something
- Challenging build - Lego beleives the challenging builds are what makes Lego special
After much though, the choice was narrowed down to 2 models - one with motors and one with pnumatics. Each was tested by a bunch of kids with the choice being made - Motors!
After that the models are built again and again to make sure the instruction sheets are correct, and the build progresses in the right order.
When everyone is happy it's sent for production.
